4.5    The answer of Imam Ibn al-Qayyim:

Imam Muhammad Ibn Abu Bakar known as Ibn Qayyim al Jauziyyah a leading theologian and faithful disciple of Imam Ibn Taimiyyah states that the Christian scholar Aphreem said:

“The hand that fashioned the body of Adam out of earth was really hanged on the cross, and the span which the heavens were measured, was actually nailed to the cross.”

Ibn al-Qayyim then asks the Christians, whom he calls “the Trinitarians and cross worshippers”, the following questions:

“You tell us, who was controlling or administering the heavens and the earth when its Master and Creator was hanged on the cross (Christians believe that the work of creation are attributed to the Father and Son), His hands and legs were fastened (on the tree) with ropes and nails, the palms of His hands with which things were fashioned were helpless. Did the world stand without its creator and administrator when He was subjected to such a terrible and disgraceful event? Or you may say that God deputed somebody to manage the world in His stead and he stepped down from His throne to put Himself on the cross and endure injuries and bring the curse on Himself for the Torah cursed anyone who was hanged on the tree?; “Or do you say that God was still controlling it when he was in such a plight? (i.e was God at this time powerless?). How would it be possible (for Him to administer the universe) after His death and burial? Or do you say, this is the very fact that we do not understand, but it is written in the Scriptures and reported by the ancestors.”[1]

The Imam further states:

“As for this impossible ‘incarnation’, that no mind, nature, law or any other of the prophethoods can possibly digest: That is the incarnation of the Self and the Being of the Lord in the human nature of one of His creatures, united, mixed, and physically interacted with it; no mind or Sharia can take it seriously. Not in the least, no prophethood could possibly bring about such a teaching, and all the line of prophethood from the first to the last cannot possibly agree with such an impossibility.”[2]
