4.3 The answer of Maulana Rahmatullah Kairanvi A great Muslim scholar and debater, Maulana Rahmatullah Kairanvi, the distinguished 19th century Indian Scholar, author of “Izharul Haq” (The Truth Revealed),[1] who once challenged Reverend C.C.P Fonder, the head of the Christian Mission of India, has noted a nice story “Three Converts To Christianity”, to show how inappropriate the Trinity is to human logic. The story goes: “It is said that three men converted to Christianity. The priest taught them the Christian faith especially the doctrine of Trinity. Once a friend of the priest came to see him. He asked the priest if he had properly taught them the basic of faith. The priest calls the converts to his presence and asked his friend to test their knowledge. He asked one of the converts about the Trinity. He answered that he had been taught that there are three gods. One is in heaven; another that was born of Mary and a third that descended on the second god in the form of a dove when he was 30 years old. The priest was angry with him and asked the second convert to answer the same question. He said that there were three gods. The Jews killed one of them so that there only two gods left. The priest admonished him on his ignorance and put the same question to the third convert. He was the most intelligent of the three. He answered that by the grace of the Lord he had learnt all that was taught to him. He said that: “One is three and three are one. One of them was crucified and because of their unity the other two also died. Now there is no God.”[2] [1] Maulana Rahmatullah Kairanvi wrote the book in response to the Christian offense against Islam in British India and specifically to counter the subversive attack made by the Rev Fonder who had written a book in Urdu entitled “Meezanul Haq” the open intention of which was to cast doubts into the minds of Muslims about the authenticity of the Quran and Islam. This learned scholar, Al-Sheikh Rahmatullah not only defended Islam, but also exposed Christianity and its teachings by obtaining guidance only from the Quran. The Rev Fonder said: “Let it be here in Agra where the Muslim Scholars have been reading the Bible, and reading my books and other books written by Western Scholar in order to prove that the Bible was false as it contains alterations and that my books are also false.” A debate took place in Jan 1854, in Akbarabad in the city of Agra. Al-Sheikh Rahmatullah proved that the Bible used at that time and still in use now was not the one given to Jesus (peace be upon him). The Rev Fonder admitted that there were alterations in the Bible. On 11th April 1854, there was a second debate, attended by diplomats and important dignitaries from all walks of life. It also ended in humiliation for the Chief Missionary, who disappeared after a couple of sessions and did not attend the rest of the debate.
