1.15  Paul and Christianity

In Christianity, Paul or Saul of Tarsus, called “the apostle”, though not numbered among the disciples appointed by Jesus Christ, assumes central importance. Pope John Paul II, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, the largest of all Christian denominations in his book “Crossing the Threshold Of Hope” emphasizes that:

“Therefore, it is above all in the writings of Paul that one must search for the first expressions of faith”. [1]

It is Paul’s “Epistles” or letters, which form the foundation of the religion that we now know as Christianity, Teaching “Salvation or Eternal life” not through Faith in the everlasting God Almighty but In the Crucified God: Jesus Christ”. Paul says in his epistle to the Romans[2]

“For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (10:9, NLT)

Without “Crucifixion and the Resurrection of Christ”, all preaching is vain and all faith is useless. Paul says in his epistle to the Corinthians:

“And if Christ was not raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your trust in God is useless…And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still under condemnation for your sins... ” (1 Corinthians 15:14-18, NLT)

[2]           Written about 58 C.E. Of all the epistles of Paul, this is the longest, the most elaborate, and the most systematic in design, reading more like a theological treatise than a personal letter. (New Living Translation of the Holy Bible, 636)
