6.10 Matthew’s Trinity Formula
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19, NLT) This type of reference, admits “McClintock and Strong’s Encyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature”: “…Proves only that there are the three subjects named, but it does not prove, by itself, that all the three belong necessarily to the divine nature, and possess equal divine honor.”[1] Making his comments on Matthew 28:19, “Peake's Commentary on the Bible”, published since 1919 states: “Most commentators doubt that the Trinitarian formula was original at this point in Matthew's Gospel, since the New Testament elsewhere does not know such formula and describes Baptism as being performed only in the name of Lord Jesus! [Example: Act 2:38, where Peter replied: “Each of you must turn from your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ…”(NLT)] It is most unlikely that Apostle Peter would have disobeyed the command of Jesus for baptizing in the three names instead of baptizing in the name of Jesus alone.”[2] |
