5.4    Jesus Lesser than the Holy Spirit

Christians profess that the Holy Spirit is in reality God’s own Spirit. But the Spirit is the last person of the Holy Trinity to be revealed.  The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that:

“The one whom the Father has sent into our hearts, the Spirit of his Son, is truly God. Consubstantial with the Father and the Son, the Spirit is inseparable from them, in both the inner life of the Trinity and his gift of love for the world.”[1]

But, if we refer ourselves to Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus seems to say otherwise of himself and the Holy Spirit, which contradicts the Christian doctrine, itself:

“Every sin or blasphemy can be forgiven - except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which can never be forgiven. Anyone who blasphemes against me, the Son of Man, can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.” (Matthew 12.31, NLT)

Jesus here makes a distinction not only in person between himself and the Holy Spirit, but also unambiguously implies that the Holy Spirit is superior in that blasphemy directed against it can not be forgiven.

Christian scholars admit that:

“There is a distinct contrast speaking against the Son of Man and speaking against the Spirit. The point is that even blasphemy against the Son of Man is forgivable, but not so against the Spirit. Thus blasphemy against the Spirit is evil in extreme.”[2]
